Why Buy Handcrafted Jewelry vs Mass Produced Jewelry

pearl handcrafted bead art pendantMass production is the producing of identical items in extremely large volume on a continuous basis. It is usually done on an assembly line by laborers who often use specialized machinery and have low skill levels. It’s popular because, of course, more products are made at a cheaper cost, thereby making the final product itself less expensive than handcrafted products. Ever since Henry Ford created the Ford Model T. in the early 20th Century, mass production has taken over the world at the expense of the small business owner, the outstanding customer service only a small business owner can give, and the handcrafted products they create.

Low cost? Sounds great, doesn’t it, but what about quality? When laborers produce jewelry on an assembly line, they aren’t putting the time or effort into making sure they are perfect and blemish free. They do exactly what their job is—no more, no less—because that’s really all they have time for and that’s what they get paid to do. An anklet might look pretty when purchased, but what good is it going to do you if you only get to wear it once and it snaps in two because inspections aren’t that thorough?

Crafters take pride in the quality of their products. When a crafter creates an item, you can be sure that time, talent, thought and energy go into its creation. Great effort has gone into each individual piece—making certain everyone is lovely and of the highest quality.

How about originality? When you buy mass produced, you get what everyone else has. Sometimes that’s fine, but one reason many people wear jewelry is to stand out. We want to wear jewelry that’s as unique and individual as we are. We want it to represent us as such. Your local chain department store may have some attractive jewelry, but it’s not really symbolic of who we are as individuals because everyone is wearing the same thing.

Handcrafted jewelry is original. You can pick a one of a kind piece of jewelry that embodies your individual taste. If you like dainty things and specific color combinations, you might choose to wear sparkling Swarovski Crystal earrings in your favorite colors. If you have a bold personality, you might wear something bright and sassy that will really catch someone’s eye. If there is something you like, but cannot find, many crafters take pleasure in creating exactly what you ask for.

Of course, mass production has its advantages too, but the sad thing is that it doesn’t represent American pride, nor does it support the small business owner. Large chain retailers are wonderful for the general population. They make shopping easier and more affordable for middle-class society, but many items you see at these stores are imported. Quality is poor and the small business owner struggles to support his family—often putting them out of business.

If you ask me the reasons to buy handcrafted jewelry far outweigh those of buying mass produced. Handcrafted jewelry is a superior, quality product, it is unique and original, and it supports the small business owner. I think I’ll splurge on the handcrafted jewelry. Which do you think is the better choice?

The Fashion of Wearing Beaded Jewelry

blue dichroic lampwork pendant
seems to come in waves, like circles that recycle things over and over, rolling old things back into the new, years after the original idea was formed. As the years go by, you may have started to recognize that things that were cool when you were a kid are somehow cool again—however bad or good the idea might be.  For instance, the latest fashions, though devoid of this kind of accessory for a few years, are again turning to beaded jewelry for hailed accessorizing.  But this kind of jewelry has been around a lot longer than you probably think.
Jewelry and ornamentation have been a part of cultures all over the world probably since it began.  As people began to experiment with the resources around them—stones, trees, plants, clay, etc, they began to see great opportunities to create beautiful things.  In tribes of old, the spiritual and political leaders of the community were sometimes designated by the kind of jewelry and accessories they wore.  It was a sign of something special—of social advantage, or of power.

These people crafted beaded necklaces, head adornments, and other things to drape on their bodies out of many things.  Sometimes they would string them on plants or animal skins, and, of course, all were made by hand.  Beaded jewelry was the norm, because most everything had to be crafted, and then strung on some kind of strand or chain.  Almost anything could become a bead:  a bone, a small rock, some precious stone or metal, or even hair or parts of an animal for good luck.

Soon enough, women began to adopt the fashion of wearing beaded jewelry.  In more recent years, it has become a large fashion industry and ranges from all kinds of weights, lengths, materials and colors.  Even handmade jewelry is becoming more popular, with kits available to the average person.  Many people have begun to make their watches into a piece of beaded jewelry, and these are becoming more and more widespread.

These practices stem from old traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation, through centuries.  Every culture has its own twist on how it is done, or what it is made from, but most cultures use some kind of beaded jewelry to designate something of meaning, or even just to promote the idea of beauty.  We are not so far removed.  And now, with so many options available, you can find the kind of jewelry that will really mean something to you.

Today, natural or propane gas is the fuel used for this intricate and precise method of bead creation while air or pure oxygen is the oxidizer that melts and shapes the glass.

Each Lampwork bead SWCreations adds to a piece of jewelry is a stunning and tiny work of art, selected from a treasure chest of colors and styles such as swirls of pastel, bold or metallic color combinations, floral patterns, and opulent solids that are either plain or embellished according to the design. Most are paired with glistening clear or richly colored Swarovski Austrian crystals and bright, oxidized Bali.925 silver.

No two selections from SWCreations are ever alike! Though Stephanie’s creative jewelry is often imitated, it is never duplicated, nor is any of her beaded designs ever mass produced. From beaded earrings to anklets to a necklace, you can be confident that the recipients on your gift list will unwrap jewelry that is as unique and special as they are.

Work at Home Mom Article

Working from home can be a very rewarding job. It is such a gift to be able to see your kids off to school and be there when they return home. There are more than 10 million Work at Home mothers ranging from your crafty mom to your data entry computer job mom. With gas prices still on the rise you might welcome not having the daily commute and shelling out all that money.

If you are currently looking for something to do from home you need to be on the alert for the Work at Home scams. Just remember that old saying, “If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.” If they are asking you for money to help you find a position this should be a red flag. Real opportunities do exist, but you will have to exercise discretion to determine if the position is real or a scam. This would be an excellent time to have your guard up and take the time to do the research. After all anyone, even scam artists, can build a presentable convincing website these days.

These are some good tips and words of caution:

  • If they are asking for money, NEVER send money; legitimate recruiters or employers will never ask you for money.
  • Check and see if the opportunity comes from a real website. If you are not familiar with the company do some additional research.
  • Look through websites to locate information about the company, such as; address, email, and telephone number. You may have to do a Whois.net search to see detailed contact information.
  • Filling out the forms could be a scam to get your email address, so be sure you thoroughly do your homework on every website, before giving out your personal information.
  • Watch out for the ‘Act Now!’ statements. Although you do not want to miss out on an opportunity, be patient no legitimate company will hire you on the spot.
  • If the income they promise seems too incredible or they promise you will only have to work a few hours a week, be very cautious. This is one of those ‘too good to be true’ red flags.

A good place to start is to determine what your areas of interest are. Also, what fields are you experienced in? The odds are if you like what you do you will probably enjoy doing it more. Someone once said “if you love what you do, the money will follow”, and I can attest to that statement. If you are starting your own business it can take 2-3 years to get the business off the ground. Starting an online business can be very rewarding but will still require work and research to climb to the top of the search engines. It is possible to create a successful internet business that requires less overhead.

If your Work at Home business does become successful you will have to learn how to balance working from home with managing your family. It is possible to use a content management system to build just about any type of online business. The content management software programs require a learning curve, but they are easier to manage on the day to day basis. In the beginning you will have more than enough time to expand your topics of interest although as your business grows you may find it is more than one person can handle. Unless your company is producing enough to hire outside help you will want to avoid spreading yourself too thin; after all there is only so much one person can do in one day and still have time for her family.

Pewter Revolution in Beaded Jewelry

Pewter Revolution in Beaded Jewelry

The word pewter may conjure images of colonial Americans drinking tankards of ale while discussing the Boston Tea Party, but this soft-luster metal can be a beautiful addition to a beaded necklace or bracelet.

First created by the Romans, early pewter was comprised of a tin and lead mixture, but the health drawbacks caused by ingestion of lead eventually became well-known and the metal eventually morphed into a non-deadly concoction of tin, antimony and copper.

Swarovski Crystal Beads History Article

swarovski crystalsSwarovski Crystal is one of the most recognized names in crystal in the world. Noted for its unique colors and coatings, and sparkling clarity it’s no wonder it is highly sought after by jewelry collector’s everywhere. As with everything though, this particular crystal also has a fascinating history.

The story of Swarovski Crystal began in 1892 when a Bohemian-born man by the name of Daniel Swarovski invented a machine that would cut crystal with superior precision. This machine required a lot of energies, so he moved his family to Wattens, Tyrol where he could take advantage of their great energy resource—hydroelectricity. It was here in 1895, at the age of 32, that his company was founded.

swarovski crystal earringsThe company has seen a lot of change and development over the last 100 years of operation. One of the first products they marketed was retroreflective glass as used in traffic lights and signals. Not long after that, Swarovski moved into the fashion market when they created sew on crystal-studded ribbons for accessory and fashion manufacturers. They even became a high profile provider of optical instruments for hunting and nature observation.

In the mid-1950’s, with the help of a man named Christian Dior, Swarovski created a finish that made his crystal glisten. This coating took his crystal to a whole new level of sparkle that was perfect for creating hanging chandelier components. Fit for royalty, some of these very pieces continue to hang today in the Palace of Versailles.

The 1970’s became a decade of “firsts” for this company. In 1976, the Swarovski crystal mouse became their first product placed on the consumer market. Shortly after that, they launched their first jewelry collection. Then they began applying the knowledge they had collected over the years in stone cutting to cutting genuine and synthetic gemstones—one of which was cubic zirconia—opening up new possibilities for their jewelry collection.

Many people recognize the name of Swarovski crystal in jewelry because it is so unique. New coatings are developed all the time—creating popular signature bead collections such as seen with the German and Tie-dye coatings. Part of what makes Swarovski jewelry so exceptional is that new beads, colors, and designs are constantly being created—leaving older creations to be discontinued.

Swarovski crystal has had over a hundred years to make their company the success they are. They continue to be held in the highest regard for their more intricate designs in crystal pieces and jewelry, as well as for the contribution they’ve made to society with the innovative design of the retroreflective glass. Who’s to say how many lives have been saved by the use of traffic lights? Swarovski maintains an emphasis on a high-quality product, and, amazingly enough, they are still finding ways to make their crystal sparkle and shine even more—ensuring anyone who wears Swarovski crystal to be a true standout.

Creating Charisma With Colors and Styles

How to Create Charisma With Colors and Style

Have you seen all those celebrities on television and how they just exude so much radiance and magnetism, that you cannot help but stay glued watching them? What is it about them that keep them attractive and desirable? The answer is one word: charisma. The process on how to achieve and possess such similar charismatic flair involves another word: colors.

all jazzed up beaded ankletThe following are basic tips and advice to help you have your own charisma with the use of colors and style techniques.

First things first, know yourself.

It helps to get the varied opinions of people who know you best. Ask around and interview family members, friends, relatives, or colleagues, and try to make them give an opinion – an honest one of course – of what it is they think are the colors that best suit you. Alternatively, you could always ask and engage the services of a consultant that specializes on image enhancement.

Such a professional could readily determine the kind of colors that work best for your particular eye color and tone of your skin, as well as your hair.

Choose the colors that work best for you.

A very effective way to test which colors are best for your skin is to face a mirror, preferably with natural available daylight, while holding a fabric or a piece of clothing under your chin or beside your eyes. Now, observe which stands out. Does the color stand out or do your features stand out?

Appropriate colors should focus more on you, and not on the dress or garment. If you have eyes as blue as the ocean, then wearing a dress that is similarly blue in color will help make your very own eyes attractive and stand out.

Wrong colors are those that make your appearance dull. It may even look repulsive, or it could cast a shadow on you. Wrong colors also give people the impression that you are sick or tired, even if you feel perfectly fine.

Apply prints and shapes.

Prints in any garments you plan to wear should just as well be proportionate to your physical features, as based on the naturalness of your body’s geometry. If your features are between medium to small, it is just as perfect that any patterns or jewelry you are to wear are sized in a similar manner.

Also, your face’s shape and features should also determine the shapes and kinds of accessories you are to wear. Oval faces may just as well wear oval earrings as well. However, a combination of features is present sometimes. Eyes that are oval sometimes belong to a face with a chin that is square. Look in the mirror and analyze what goes best with what.

Layer your clothes.

Sometimes, this is the best course for anyone, so as not to appear overly dressed or under dressed for the occasion. Wearing layers makes it convenient for anyone to take off that scarf, jacket, or tie, so as not to appear too formal.

Overall, practice makes perfect. Eventually, getting used to the colors you have on you will make you more confident and attractive, as you get to determine which makes you feel more magnetic and charismatic. The important thing is being comfortable with your own skin, your own color, and your own style. Work on those features, enhancing them without the need to change them. You are unique; embrace your uniqueness. That charisma cannot be bought or sold.

Mood Beads Article - What Mood Are You

Mood Beads Article - What Mood Are You

In the 1970’s a new and interesting kind of jewelry became one of the biggest fads of the decade to hit the market. It was the first piece of jewelry that could supposedly tell what mood its wearer was in. This piece of jewelry was the mood ring—it was fun, it was fresh, and it was totally cool if you owned one! Today, mood jewelry comes in more than just the original form of mood rings. There are now necklaces, earrings, toe rings, and most recently, beads to become bracelets. Regardless of form, however, mood jewelry has an interesting history.

A Charmed History: Charm Bracelets Provide Hope & Comfort

As far back as the Neolithic era, humankind chose to carry unusual stones or a piece of wood as protection from enemies or evil spirits. During the time of the Egyptian pharaohs, the first recognizable charm bracelets and necklaces appeared. These were elaborate pieces of jewelry made of precious stones and metals. Charms were also used to identify an individual to the gods in the afterlife.
