Choose How You Want to Wear Your Anklet
There are two popular ways to wear an anklet:
Above the Ankle Bone
Many people prefer wearing an anklet just above the ankle bone for everyday wear. This position helps keep the anklet comfortably in place and works well with sneakers, flats, and ankle-strap sandals.
Tip: If your ankle doesn't narrow much above the ankle bone, you may find that wearing your anklet below the bone provides a more secure fit.
Below the Ankle Bone
A lower-fitting anklet sits just below the ankle bone and creates a relaxed, beach-inspired look. This style pairs beautifully with flip-flops, slides, barefoot sandals, and many summer outfits.

How to Measure an Anklet
The Easiest Way to Find Your Anklet Size
If you already own an anklet that fits comfortably, measuring it is the quickest and most accurate way to determine your size.
Lay the anklet flat and measure from the end of the clasp to the closure ring (or the point where you normally fasten it). That measurement is a great starting point when ordering a new anklet.
If your favorite anklet is especially chunky or made with large beads, you may want to add ¼ inch to your measurement. Thicker anklets wrap around your ankle differently than delicate chain or small-bead designs, so a little extra length often provides a more comfortable fit.
Measure Your Ankle
If you don't already own an anklet that fits comfortably, measuring your ankle is the next best option.
You'll need:
- A flexible measuring tape or a piece of string
- A ruler (if using string)
Stand naturally and measure the location where you plan to wear your anklet.

If you're between sizes, I usually recommend sizing up by ¼ inch. A slightly looser anklet is generally more comfortable than one that's too tight.

In fact, that was one of the reasons I began making handmade anklets in a wider range of sizes.
I've also noticed that customers who order 8-inch anklets are much more likely to exchange them because they're too small. If you're unsure of your size or find yourself between sizes, I generally recommend choosing the slightly larger option or selecting an adjustable anklet for the most comfortable fit.
Caring for Your Handmade Anklet
To keep your handmade anklet looking beautiful:
- Remove it before swimming, showering, or using a hot tub.
- Apply lotions, sunscreen, and perfume before putting on your anklet.
- Avoid exposure to chlorine, saltwater, and harsh cleaning products.
- Wipe your anklet with a soft jewelry cloth after wearing to remove body oils and moisture.
Note about Metals:
- Sterling silver anklets can be protected by storing them in a dry jewelry box or airtight bag when not in use.
- Stainless steel anklets are more resistant to water.
- Silver-plated anklets can be ruined if dipped in silver cleaner; use a jewelry-cleaning cloth to polish them up.
