The Film and Stage History of Beaded Jewelry - Superstar Swarovski Crystals

Swarovski's place in the history of beaded jewelry wouldn't be complete without taking a fun look at some of the leading roles these superstar crystals have earned both in movies and on stage - you may be surprised!

The first time Swarovski crystals were featured on the big screen was in the 1932 Marlene Dietrich movie Blonde Venus; the glittering crystals studded both her clothes and her jewelry. Then in 1953, Swarovski decorated the iconic person of none other than Marilyn Monroe in the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - those memorably brilliant sparkles that she flashed during her song "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" were actually Swarovski crystals.

Swarovski Austrian Crystals: Their Many Shades of Pink

Swarovski Austrian Crystals: Their Many Shades of Pink

Okay.  Pink is pink.  Right?  Not according to Swarovski Austrian Crystals: Shades of Pink.  This company, which is the genius of glass and crystal, has 16 shades of pink!

Their five standard pink colors include Rose Pink, Light Rose Pink, Light Satin Rose Pink, Rosaline, and Fuchsia. These lovely, feminine crystal beads make gorgeous beaded jewelry.  Jewelers often choose Rose Pink as the October birthstone due to its similarity to the pink diamond. It presents an understated, elegant look as a ring or earrings.  The Light Rose Pink makes a pleasing contrast to all the other pinks.  Even lighter than the Light Rose, Rosaline has a light lavender tint and goes well with that color or contrasts with purple. Fuchsia presents a deep rose color with overtones of purple.

The Fascinating History of Seed Beads in Beaded Jewelry

The Fascinating History of Seed Beads in Beaded Jewelry

Did you know that the smallest seed beads are only the size of a grain of sand? Measured as "24 aught", this translates to only 0.91 mm round in size. Just to illustrate how small this actually is, most seed beads are no smaller than 15 aught - 1.3 mm round - and you can fit 25 of them along one inch of string. In bead measurements, the larger the number, the smaller the bead. So how was something so extremely small created before the invention of modern machinery?

Creative Ways to Store Your Unique Beaded Earrings

Earrings are such a fun accessory.  It is delightful to find a unique pair, especially if they are handmade.  I personally love getting compliments on my earrings and it is even more fun if there is a story to share in response to the compliment.  One difficulty I face as I’ve collected my jewelry and especially my earrings, is storing them.  I want them to be easily visible and accessible, and most especially, I don’t want to lose one!  Here are a few ways I’ve found that help me keep track of my collection of unique beaded earrings:

Apatite Gemstone - Gemstone Meanings and Magical Traits

Apatite Gemstone - Gemstone Meanings and Magical Traits

Magic is something everyone ponders at some point in their life. We could be living the happiest, most successful lives and yet we'll still long for some abnormal escape from reality. Perhaps getting lost in Harry Potter novels and dreaming about being psychic or having extraordinary healing powers are just not the right way of going about it? It will amaze you, as it amazed me, the things this simple gemstone is capable of when worn in jewelry and beaded jewelry.

Famous Gems and Beaded Jewelry: Wallis Simpson's Cartier Panther

Wallis Simpson's famous panther bracelet is a gem among beaded jewelry! It was commissioned from the famous Parisian jeweler Cartier by the Duchess in 1952; she also helped co-design it. She wanted a life-like great cat that would stalk its way around her wrist. Cartier's head jeweler Jeanne Toussaint created an exquisite cat of pave diamonds and black onyx set in fully articulated platinum with blazing emerald eyes.

Famous Gems and Beaded Jewelry: The Black Prince's Ruby

Of all the famous gems and beaded jewelry in history, the Black Prince's Ruby is one of the most exciting and intriguing. In fact, this "ruby" isn't even a ruby - it's actually a red spinel! The red and blue forms of spinel have been misidentified as rubies and sapphires for at least a millennia. It's very similar in color, found in similar places, and is even rarer than its counterpoints. Like the Black Prince's ruby, many of the rubies and sapphires in the crown jewels of Europe are actually spinel!

Famous Gems and Beaded Jewelry - The Pink Star

he Pink Star (formerly known as the Steinmetz Pink Diamond) is the largest, and arguably the most beautiful, pink diamond in the world. Found in one of the famed De Beers mines in Africa in 1999, the rough stone weighed an extraordinary 132.5 carats.

Pink diamonds are rare and pink diamonds of this size, quality and breathtaking color are extremely rare; cutting this stone took over twenty cautious and painstaking months. It was "cast in epoxy more than 50 times in order to create models upon which the design team could experiment with different cuts" according to the Sotheby's catalogue.
