From Pumpkin Spice to Pumpkin Harvest: When a Blend Evolves
Some frit blends arrive exactly as planned. Others quietly become something entirely new.
That was the case with Pumpkin Harvest.
Pumpkin Spice Original Blend
When I originally created Pumpkin Spice, my goal was to capture the comforting colors of early autumn: glowing pumpkins, creamy gourds, warm spices, maple syrup, and the soft golden light that arrives as summer gives way to fall.
The blend did exactly what I hoped.
It produced warm oranges, creamy ivories, champagne, apricot, and caramel tones that flowed beautifully through swirl beads, organic mosaics, and layered encased designs. Depending on the base glass, every bead seemed to develop its own personality while still belonging unmistakably to the same collection.
It has become one of my favorite seasonal blends.
From One Test to a New Blend
Sometimes a new blend begins with a sketch or an idea.
Sometimes it begins with a handful of glass.
After spending time working with my original Pumpkin Spice blend, I became curious what would happen if I introduced a little more of the earthy side of autumn. Rather than redesigning the recipe from scratch, I created a small experimental batch by adding a few brown tones to Pumpkin Spice as a simple test.
The results immediately caught my attention. Now, keep in mind I added some gold aventurine to this set.
The warm oranges and creamy ivories were still there, but the additional browns brought a new richness to the palette. The beads developed flowing ribbons that reminded me of weathered wood, dried leaves, harvest fields, and late autumn afternoons. Some of the reactive glass even introduced subtle hints of plum and woodland tones that appeared naturally as the glass moved in the flame.
What began as a simple experiment quickly became something I wanted to explore further.
That test batch eventually became Pumpkin Harvest.
Three Personalities, One Blend
One of my favorite discoveries while testing Pumpkin Harvest was how differently it behaves depending on the bead style.
Mosaic beads preserve the individual fragments of pumpkin orange, cream, caramel, and earth tones, creating colorful patterns that resemble scattered leaves.
Swirl beads blend those same colors into flowing ribbons where browns, oranges, and occasional plum accents seem to appear from nowhere as the glass twists together.
Adding gold aventurine introduces yet another variation, catching the light like late afternoon sunshine filtering through autumn trees.
The same blend tells three different stories. My idea of a successful blend is when it is versatile in any style of beads. That gives me an idea that the beads should work well in other glass mediums like fusing and glassblowing.
That's the Fun of Glass
One of the reasons I enjoy developing frit blends is that glass is never completely predictable.
A single ingredient can change everything.
Years ago, one small adjustment during another experiment accidentally led me to create what eventually became my Paris Pink blend.
Pumpkin Harvest reminded me of that experience.
Sometimes the best ideas aren't created by starting over; they come from paying attention to what the glass is asking for.
An Autumn Story Continues
Pumpkin Spice will always represent the bright, welcoming colors that begin the season.
Pumpkin Harvest simply tells the next chapter.
It embraces the deeper colors of autumn, weathered wood, dried grasses, rich earth, and leaves beginning to fade into bronze, rust, and brown.
Both belong to the same family.
They simply capture different moments in the season.
