The Magic of Swarovski: Coated in Crystals

To stay on top of the competition and within current trends, the company began using coatings or effects, which help them trump other bead companies every time. There are two main types of effects Swarovski uses: Classic and Exclusive.

The Classic coating involves all the main jewelry colors, while also including shades from across the entire color spectrum. An Exclusive coating is an effect created with international trend agencies, such as high-end fashion designers. One example of an Exclusive coated bead would be Crystal Scarabaeus Green (001 SCGR) designed by Jean Paul Gaultier.  It is easy to tell which beads have an effect according to the Swarovski Color Chart Guide because they all have a 001 code. Any color on the chart that is has Swarovski Exclusive Effect will be underlined.

There are five Crystal Effects that Swarovski uses, they are Transparent, Metallic, Full Coating, Crystal Patina, and LacquerPRO. From there the bead can vary due to additional coatings or effects which are represented by 2x, B, V, Z, or FC. A bead with a 2x in the code means that both sides of the bead have been treated with the effect, whether is be Metallic or Crystal Patina. B code signifies that all three sides of the cube have been treated, where V shows that the effect is used on the reverse side of a crystal. Z simply means that a part of the crystal was coated and not the entire bead. FC indicates that it is Fully Coated with an all over, consistent application of intense effects.
