Some frit blends seem to tell you exactly what they want to be. Winterberry was not one of those blends.

At first glance, it looks soft and seasonal, with creamy ivory, snowy white, blush pink, berry red, and deeper ruby tones. Once I started using it in the flame, though, I realized just how versatile it could be.

So far, I’ve tested Winterberry in three different bead styles: mosaic, swirl, and swirl with shimmer. Even though all three use the same frit blend, each style brings out something different.

That is one of the things I love most about working with glass. The same colors can behave very differently depending on how they are applied, how much heat they receive, what base glass is underneath them, and whether they are left on the surface or encased.

Mosaic: Berries in the Snow

The mosaic lampwork beads version is probably the most literal interpretation of the name. The colors stay more separated, creating scattered spots and pools of ruby red, berry pink, ivory, and white across the surface.

Some beads stay lighter and creamier, while others develop stronger red and pink accents. The finished look reminds me of bright berries scattered against snow, which is exactly the feeling I was hoping for with Winterberry.

I also like how much variation there is from bead to bead. Even when I use the same blend and technique, each bead develops its own color balance.

Swirl: Softer and More Fluid

The swirl lampwork beads version changes the look quite a bit. Instead of individual spots, the colors stretch into ribbons of blush, ruby, ivory, and white.

The deeper reds soften and become more fluid, and some areas almost look like watercolor moving through the glass. It still feels wintery, but the overall effect is gentler and a little more romantic.

This is one of the things that makes Winterberry so interesting to me. The basic palette stays the same, but changing the technique gives it a completely different personality.

Swirl with Shimmer

Of course, once I made the regular swirl beads, I wanted to see what would happen if I added a little shimmer.

The aventurine adds small flashes of sparkle between the berry and cream tones. It doesn't overpower the colors, but it adds another layer of movement when the beads catch the light.

The regular swirl feels soft and wintry, while the shimmer version feels a little more festive. It gives the blend a holiday feel without turning it into a traditional red-and-green Christmas palette. These are the prettiest shimmering lampwork beads, and they work for Christmas or really any time of year.

One Blend, Several Personalities

That is probably what has surprised me most about Winterberry. The mosaic version highlights contrast, the swirl version emphasizes softness, and the shimmer version adds sparkle and movement.

I am also working on an artisan bead set, which should give me another chance to see how the blend behaves in a more free-form design.

At this point, I feel like I have only started exploring what Winterberry can do.

More Versatile Than I Expected

Winterberry frit blend began as a seasonal blend, but I can see it working well beyond winter. The creamy neutrals keep it soft enough for romantic designs, while the deeper ruby tones add enough contrast for more dramatic pieces.

The pinks can feel delicate, playful, or floral depending on the base glass and technique. That makes the blend useful for winter jewelry, holiday designs, Valentine-inspired pieces, floral beads, berry-themed sets, shimmer designs, and artisan focal beads.

That kind of versatility is exactly what I look for in a frit blend. I like color combinations that leave room for experimentation rather than producing the same result every single time.

Still More to Explore

Three styles in, Winterberry still feels like it has more to show me.

That is probably why I enjoy creating new frit blends so much. Mixing the colors is only the beginning; the real discovery happens when the glass hits the flame and starts doing things I did not completely expect.

Winterberry has definitely been one of those blends. Explore our handmade lampwork beads. Shop the artisan frit blend.
