Featured in the September/August 2022 issue of Glass Line Magazine, the Aqua Organic Shimmer Lampwork Focal Bead project reflects an important stage in my lampworking journey—learning to create larger beads with confidence. Moving beyond smaller beads required a deeper understanding of glass behavior and layering techniques, and the ability to maintain balance as the bead grew in size.

This tutorial shares some of the lessons and "ah-ha" moments that helped me improve my focal bead work, including using larger bead rollers, building glass in layers, and encouraging beautiful reactions between neighboring colors. Perhaps most importantly, it embraces the idea that not every unexpected result is a flaw—sometimes those surprises become the most interesting part of the finished bead.
